Simplifying Your Storage Unit

After I started using my storage unit year-round, I realized that I needed to clean the place up. There were boxes everywhere, which made it really frustrating to find the things that I needed. My disorganized space also caused damage, since things got crushed and stepped on whenever I tried to find things. It took a lot of work, but I decided to take an entire weekend and simplify my space. I removed all of my belongings and then sorted, labeled, and reorganized all of my boxes. When I was finished, my space was clean, tidy, and easy to use. Read here to learn how to simplify your storage unit.

Tips For Packing Before Moving

Blog

If you are planning on moving between states, then there is quite a bit of planning ahead for you. You will need to do some research on your moving company, figure out your budget for moving, and get everything packed. To help make things seem a little less stressful, here are some tips for that final category: packing your things efficiently.

Use the Right Container for the Job

First of all, you want to make sure that you use containers that will be suitable for the trip at hand. While a jaunt across town might only require some cardboard boxes, an interstate journey might require something a bit sturdier, like reusable plastic containers.

You'll also want to make sure that you pick boxes that are right for the contents. If you are shipping some glassware or some fragile, old antiques, then you might want to buy some smaller, specialized boxes.

Pick Padding That Fits Your Needs

Even if you can buy smaller boxes that are perfect for your fragile goods, you still want to find some padding that you can use to increase the safety of your valuables.

  • Bubble wrap can be a good choice, but unless you plan on using a ton of it in the future, it might not be the best investment. Bubble wrap is often sold in bulk, which means that you will need to buy a lot more than is immediately necessary.

  • Foam can also work, but it has the same drawbacks as bubble wrap. If you won't be shipping a lot of fragile items in the future, then storing foam can be more trouble than it's worth.

  • A much cheaper option would be to wrap your valuables in some similar materials that you have at home, such as thick blankets, comforters, or other clothing. This can be tricky, since these materials won't offer the same level of protection as foam or bubble wrap, but it will cost you a lot less.

Pick Boxes That Are the Right Size

Finally, you want to make sure that you distribute the weight between boxes in a way that makes sense. You want to put heavier objects in smaller boxes and lighter objects in larger boxes. This will evenly distribute the weight across loads, which means that it will be easy for the movers to get each box to the car.

To be more blunt, you want to make sure that all of your boxes are easy to handle so that the moving company won't accidentally damage them while loading and unloading. While the terms of the move might protect your goods if such an accident were to happen, it's much easier to just make sure that nothing breaks in the first place.
